In The Future of Basketball, Don Showalter—USA Basketball’s Director of Coach Development—shares his forward-thinking perspective on how youth basketball must evolve to meet the needs of today’s players. With decades of experience coaching at the grassroots and national levels, Showalter offers a compelling vision that blends tradition with innovation, always keeping the development of the young athlete at the center.
Showalter begins by emphasizing that the future of basketball is not just about producing elite players—it’s about developing well-rounded individuals. He argues that coaches must move beyond a win-at-all-costs mentality and instead focus on creating environments where players can grow in confidence, character, and competence.
A key theme in his talk is the importance of fundamentals. While the game continues to evolve with faster pace and more complex strategies, Showalter insists that mastering the basics—footwork, passing, shooting, and defensive positioning—remains essential. However, he also stresses that these skills should be taught in game-like situations, where players are encouraged to make decisions and solve problems in real time.
This leads to one of Showalter’s core coaching principles: decision-making under pressure. He believes that the best way to prepare players for the modern game is to put them in scenarios that mimic real competition. This means less isolated drilling and more small-sided games, scrimmages, and situational play that challenge players to think, adapt, and communicate.
Showalter also highlights the role of the coach as a mentor and educator, not just a tactician. He encourages coaches to build strong relationships with their players, to understand their motivations, and to create a culture of trust and accountability. “Kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” he reminds us—a mantra that underscores the emotional intelligence required in great coaching.
Looking ahead, Showalter envisions a basketball landscape that is more player-centered, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate. He calls for better coach education, more emphasis on long-term athlete development, and a renewed focus on values like teamwork, resilience, and respect.
His message is both practical and inspiring: the future of basketball depends not just on systems or strategies, but on the people who teach the game. By investing in thoughtful, intentional coaching, we can ensure that basketball continues to be a powerful force for personal and social growth.
