About

Maria Agius coaches U14 Girls Basketball in Malta, working with children and young people in Kenya. Festus is part of the ICOACHKIDS Champions Class of 2025. Like many others, She first got into coaching after she stopped actively playing. Having been approached by her club to help out, she quickly realised that she genuinely enjoyed supporting others — especially in helping them tackle complex tasks by breaking them down into smaller, achievable steps.

“I’ve been fortunate to work with and learn from a number of outstanding coaches, both at club and national levels. I consider them as mentors and friends. From each, I picked up something unique — from technical skills to the softer, human side of coaching. If I had a time machine, I’d definitely go back and apply many of these lessons earlier on — but I’m grateful for every step of the journey”

Why Maria is Passionate About Putting Kids First in Sport

“I believe kids should leave every session with more than just improved skills — they should feel confident, heard, and part of a team. Sport is a powerful space for learning life skills like resilience, empathy, and leadership.

These qualities show up every day in sport: bouncing back from a tough game builds resilience; showing sportsmanship — in both defeat and victory — develops empathy and respect ; and whether it's taking charge in attack or organizing a defense, sport gives kids the chance to practise real leadership”

Maria’s Top Tips for Others Working with Young People in Sport

The advice I return to most often is what my mentors taught me:

  • Make it engaging

  • Set them up for success — help them feel and be successful.

  • Treat them like they’re your own kids — with care, respect, and high expectations.
