ICOACHKIDS Champion: Festus Ochieng

About
Festus Ochieng is a Coach at Supernovas by InDrive, working with children and young people in Kenya. Festus is part of the ICOACHKIDS Champions Class of 2025
As a young player, Festus gives credit to his Uncle Joe who helped shape his coaching journey from a young age working with young girls at Suba Lakers. As a young kid he wanted to play professional football but I did not make it. However, he always felt the urge to help guide the young ones to fall in love with the game and to help them see football better than he did.
"I am passionate about putting kids first because, for too long, they have for a long time been asked to play football in the lense of adults and not kids. They need someone to be with them, to feel them, to know them and someone that they can feel safe around. Someone who sees them as they are and cares about their feelings before we can even kick a ball".
Festus' Top Tips for Youth Sport Coaches:
1) Get to know the kid infront of you first before you show them about the game. Put them first.
2) Let the kids play as much as possible. The kids loves football and giving them more time on the ball is the best way to help them learn the game.
3) Safety first by ensuring that you are in the safest environment for the kids not to be worried about their safety when they are playing. Kids love where they feel safe.
4) Fun, fun, fun. When it is fun they always most likely don't want to go back home because they want to enjoy till the end.
5) Love for the game over learning the game enables the kids to come back ready to play and the more they learn.
6) preparation is key and it only makes things easy and working as you had set them to and to adjust where necessary.
7)patience enables you realise the true potential of each kid and makes you feel easy with the kids not wishing to see them act like adults.
8) Learning never stops and what you know is just a tip of the iceberg keep trying to be up-to-date with the latest trends and learning from those experienced than you are.
9) Keep it simple to the kids making their progress easy and making it better for them to understand what you expect of them.
10) Have the kids involved, they are more informed and knowledgeable that you know. Give them tasks, responsibilities and let them be in charge and be part of the process. You'll learn alot.
11) Positively engage the parents, when the parents get to hear regularly about the progress of their kids however small, they will always be there to help you get the best out of their kids.
