How did you get into coaching children and young people?

I have always aspired to pursue a career related to youth and sports. When a friend of mine, who was also an athlete, experienced a car accident, I felt a strong desire to study and coach young individuals and children with disabilities, to support them in continuing to dream and surpass their limitations. From that point, my path became clear. I am grateful to be working with children and young people with intellectual disabilities, a role I attained seven years ago thanks to the headmistress of the school who believed in me and provided valuable insights into supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Why are you passionate about putting kids first in sport?

Sports play a significant role in character building and personal development. Engaging in sports can enhance an individual's well-being, self-esteem, and self-confidence, foster friendships, and provide a safe environment free from abuse. Promoting these principles and values to young children through sports can positively influence their growth and development. Observing them thrive in this environment is a gratifying experience.

Eleni’s Top Tips for Youth Sport Coaches:

  • Encourage creative thinking. Give kids different experiences and chances to explore, focusing on their well-being, curiosity, and growth rather than just performance.

  • Make sure they enjoy and learn, not just compete to win.

  • Recognize each child's individuality—tailor your approach to their unique needs, moods, and stages of development.

  • Remember, young athletes can teach you valuable lessons too.

  • Be a role model by showing respect and fairness, and inspire them to be their best selves.
